What is Vigil?

Vigil is a collective memory gallery for place, shaped by the memories people leave behind.

The project began after returning to my hometown in Iran and realizing how much had changed, and how little of that feeling could actually be recorded. News can capture events and maps can show geography, but neither holds what a place feels like to the people who live there, love it, or have had to leave it.

Vigil invites anyone, whether resident, diaspora, visitor, or simply someone attached to a place, to contribute a short memory, feeling, or observation. These fragments are read by AI, translated into shared visual and emotional cues, and used to generate an evolving image of that place.

Over time, the gallery shifts through lived memory rather than official images or fixed narratives. The project asks whether AI, shaped by enough human recollection, can help preserve something emotionally true about a place.
